Solution set.

Due date: Feb 18

Files to be submitted:
  Hw1.zip

Purpose:

Related Course Outcomes:

The main course outcomes covered by this assignment are:

LO3 -- Analyze the performance metrics of networks, including bandwidth, delay, and error rate.

LO9 -- Use networking tools including telnet, ping, traceroute, bing, and Ethereal to evaluate simple network characteristics.

Specification:

All files you create for this assignment should be ZIP'd together in the file Hw1.zip which you submit. First, create a readme.txt file listing all your group members. Next I want you to do the following calculation problems out of our textbook: Ch1: 5, 7, 15, 18; Ch2: 1, 4, 5. Put your solutions in Hw1.pdf. Make sure you keep the file size small (maximum upload size for Hw1.zip is 2Mb).

For the second part of the assignment, I want you to gain experience with a couple common easy to use network tools: whois, ping, and traceroute. As book activities for Ch 1 problem 4, 38, 39 seem like reasonable tasks to start with, so I will have you do each of these problems. I want you to run these commands either using Cygwin, or from a Linux, Unix, or Mac. Write up your experiments for each problem in the file experiments.txt You should use the Unix "script" to get transcripts of each experiment you do. cat these together into the files: 4.log, 38.log, and 39.log and submit them in your zip file too.

Point Breakdown

Calculational Problems (1pt each) 7pts
Problems 4, 38, and 39. (1/2 each for write-up; 1/2 each for log file) 3pts
Total10pts
